In our latest entry in the Create Your Own Vision series, where we interview the visionaries and creators in the communities which we operate in, we got in touch with Biatris Lasu from Ottawa Social Girl Club. The Ottawa Social Girl Club puts on events for women in Ottawa, with a simple goal in mind: 'To create a space where women can build friendships, find support, and feel part of a larger community.' Biatris recently put on an event in our Glebe location, so we thought we would sit down with her and find out a bit about her journey.

- What inspired you to start the Ottawa Social Girls Club, and how did the idea first take shape?
The Ottawa Social Girls Club started as a response to something I kept hearing (and personally experiencing)—how hard it can be to make new friends as an adult. Whether you're new to the city or just looking to expand your social circle, there aren’t always easy ways to meet people outside of work or school. The idea took shape organically: I wanted to create a space where women could connect in a way that felt effortless, welcoming, and fun. It started as a small gathering and quickly grew into something much bigger than I ever imagined.
- Can you describe the core mission of the club?
At its core, Ottawa Social Girls Club is about fostering meaningful connections. We aim to create a space where women can build friendships, find support, and feel part of a larger community. The goal is to break down the barriers that often keep people from putting themselves out there and to provide opportunities for women to show up as they are—no pressure, no cliques, just good company.
- How has the club evolved over the years?
What started as casual meetups has evolved into a more structured community with regular events, collaborations, and a strong online presence. As the group has grown, so has our vision—we’re constantly looking for new ways to make connections more accessible, whether it’s through book clubs, brunches, or wellness events. It’s been amazing to see the community take on a life of its own, with members forming friendships beyond the events themselves.
- Why did you feel there was a need for a club like this in Ottawa?
Ottawa is a city that can sometimes feel a little transient, with people coming and going for work or school. It’s also easy to fall into a routine and feel like there aren’t many opportunities to meet new people. I wanted to change that. Women deserve spaces where they can show up, be themselves, and connect with others who get it—without the awkwardness that sometimes comes with traditional networking or socializing.
- Inclusivity seems to be a core philosophy of the club. Could you tell us why this is so important in a club of this kind?
When we say “social,” we mean for everyone. It’s important that no one feels like they have to fit a certain mold to be part of this community. Women come from all walks of life, and we celebrate that diversity. The more inclusive we are, the richer the connections become. Everyone deserves to feel like they belong.
- Could you share a story that best illustrates the transformative power of community within the club?
One of the most rewarding parts of this club has been seeing friendships form naturally beyond our events. A perfect example is two members who met during one of our summer walks and ended up planning a weekend trip to New York together! It started as casual conversations during the walk, and before they knew it, they were exploring a whole new city side by side.
Another time, two members connected over their shared love of live music and ended up going to a concert together—just weeks after first meeting at one of our events. And it’s not just big trips or concerts—so many now regularly grab coffee, meet for lunch, or plan Friday night get together after first crossing paths at our events. Seeing those connections happen so effortlessly proves just how powerful community can be when you create the right space for it.
- Which of the events that the club has hosted have you been most proud of?
I honestly can’t point to just one—each event has its own unique energy and impact. Some bring out deeper conversations, some are full of laughter and spontaneity, and others create space for people to try something new. Whether it’s a casual brunch, a summer walk, or an arts and craft picnic, every gathering has its own magic. The most fulfilling part is seeing how each event brings people together in different ways, and that’s what makes every single one special.
- What have been some unexpected challenges in building and sustaining this community, and how did you overcome them?
One challenge has been ensuring that as we grow, the club maintains the same sense of warmth and intimacy. Scaling up without losing that close-knit feel is something we’re always thinking about. We’ve tackled this by making sure every event feels intentional and by actively encouraging members to engage in smaller breakout moments within larger gatherings.
- Who have been your biggest influences or mentors, and how do they continue to inspire your work?
I’m inspired by other women who have built strong, inclusive communities—whether in person or online. Seeing how they foster connection, navigate challenges, and stay true to their mission motivates me to keep growing and evolving this space.
- What are three lessons you have learned along the way that might be helpful to other aspiring community leaders wanting to create something similar?
- Start small, but start somewhere. Don’t wait for the perfect plan—just begin, and let the community shape itself over time.
- Authenticity matters. People connect with realness, so don’t try to make things look or feel a certain way just for the sake of it.
- Be open to change. A community will evolve naturally, and that’s a good thing. Listen to what people want and be willing to adapt.
- What’s next for Ottawa Social Girls Club?
We’re looking at expanding our event offerings and creating more structured ways for members to connect outside of gatherings. There’s also potential for collaborations with other local businesses and organizations that align with our mission. Lots of exciting things ahead!
- Do you wear Ollie Quinns? If so, which ones?
Love this question! Yes, I do—I have the BARTON and they’ve basically become a staple for me.
