Create Your Own Vision: Tamara Taggart

For Women's month this year, we sat down with a few women who inspire us to find out how they achieved their success, what struggles they have faced as a women in their areas, and what advice they would give to other women hoping to achieve similar success.

In our first post of the series, we interviewed Tamara Taggart - Broadcaster, community leader, and champion for the well-being of children and people with disabilities.

  • Can you share a bit about your journey in the business world and how you reached the level of success you have today?

  • I worked in BC media for about 28 years, both radio and television. I started my career in radio in the early nineties and anchored my last television newscast in 2018. Somewhere in-between, I was invested into the Order of BC, hosted a home improvement show, won awards and accolades for working in television and made a million memories. It was a beautiful time and then it ended, from there I ran as a candidate in the 2019 Federal election (and lost) and in 2020 I started a podcast called Telus Talks with Tamara Taggart. The isolation of the pandemic gave me a new perspective on what’s important so working from home and parenting three teenagers has been my greatest success so far.

  • As a successful businesswoman, what challenges did you face in your career related to gender, and how did you overcome them?

  • I have been away from TV for 5 years so my perspective is very different now - there were a lot of challenges throughout the years, a lot of it I’m still processing. It was a busy career, at times it felt like there was no time for anything else but work…it wasn’t easy having three babies and then cancer while anchoring the flagship newscast.

I host a podcast now and I’m lucky to have so many incredible conversations, my media career gave me the tools to ask questions and listen - every guest teaches me something new.

  • What are three habits that have helped you get where you are today?

  • I find the humour, I’m forever curious and I can small-talk for weeks.

  • Do you think it’s becoming any easier for women to succeed in business, and if so why do you think that is?

  • It feels like there’s more room for women to grow, for so long we weren’t sharing our struggles and successes but now we have social media and community support. There’s more transparency and a lot of us feel empowered, about everything.

  • If you could give one piece of advice to other women aspiring for similar success in their industries, what would it be?

  • Someone told me a long time ago to ‘find something you love and then work your ass off’ - I think that’s good advice for a lot of things!

  • Who are some of your female role models?

  • My role models have definitely changed over the years, I admire so many women. This season of my life has me spending the most amount of time with our three kids so right now I’m in awe of them - I love reading about women who are transparent with their journey and juggling of life.

  • What’s your favourite pair of OQs?

  • I just got the Huda frames and I LOVE them! So good.
